How would you feel if, as a woman, you are denied everything, from independence to a real job, doing what you love and most importantly, making decisions for yourself?

I, for one, would be quite mad. Last I checked, men and women are equally competent and smart.

This book sadly, doesn't see it that way.

Spin the Dawn is a retelling of Mulan's story and one done so well, I was left speechless at the end.

The story follows Maia Tamarin, a young seamstress who works happily in her father's shop. She is the only one amongst her siblings who showed any interest in their father's skill and the only one who truly wanted to learn it. 

So she did.

Now back to what I said, she is happily working in her father's shop, that is, until the day the imperial summons comes.

Just like in Mulan's story, her father is summoned by the emperor but in this case it is not for war. It is for a competition.

Now we know the drill, her father can't go so she has to in his stead. But what makes this story more fun is that she has to pose as her brother to be able to compete. 

As I said, this world is not fair to women so...

Mister, I'll make a man out of you

Sorry, wrong story. I got carried away 😅

But back to the subject. Maia poses as her brother to be able to enter the competition for the position of Imperial Tailor. 

And thus the fun begins 🤭 and the danger, but that's something better left for you to discover 😉

Okay look, if I have to pick only one thing I love about Maia, that would be her determination. Despite everything she's been through and everything she has to sacrifice time and again, she never relents and never complains. She takes everything thrown at her with her chin held high and turns them into lessons on how to improve and do better.

And that, my friends, is one hell of a character.

And don't even get me started on Evan, I was hooked from page one 🤭

The story is very complex and it can get confusing at times, but it kept me engaged the whole time and it was a struggle to put the book down even to go eat 😅 

I love Elizabeth Lim's writing style and the way she built the characters, the world, the magic system, everything. She turned words on paper into a full on animated movie with a real movie hot on its heels in my head.

AND I STILL DON'T HAVE SATISFACTORY EVAN FANARTS! That should be forbidden at this point.

But anywho, I don't want to spoil the book which I know I will if I go on more. So I'll stop here.

But guys, please read this series, both this and its sequel. They are so worth it, you won't regret a single minute spent reading this masterpiece of a duology!

The Cousins by Karen M. McManus | Review

Now this was a very twisted mystery, but sure worth every single page.

So let's start at the beginning. Karen M. McManus is one of those authors that for me, can do absolutely no wrong. Their books are an auto buy by now, knowing ahead that they will be a 5 star read and so far, they have not disappointed.

The Cousins is a more recent book by this author and certainly my favorite so far. Each one goes into the YA mystery and murser mystery genres, understanding the assignment to perfection. 

The book follows cousins Milly, Aubrey and Jonah Story, each having received a letter from their grandmother with a request to spend the summer at her resort, jobs already set in place for them.

Pretty innocent so far, right?

Wrong.

The story is far more intertwined than a simple summer job and a sudden family reunion with a long lost grandmother that is more of a legend for them than a relative. 

20 years ago, Mildred Story disowned her children and banned them from their family home for no apparent reason, as well as cutting them off. The only explanation her children got was a letter, stating:

"You know what you did"

And yet, neither knew. Each of the 4 Story siblings was even more confused than the last.

Fast forward 20 years, each of them sees an opportunity through the letters their children received, hoping to either get their inheritance, or reconnect with their estranged mother and maybe find out what prompted her to kick them all off the island.

Starting to sound more interesting, isn't it?

Throughout the book we get all of the grandchildren's POVs, and so we discover their background stories, family life and how they feel about a grandmother they never met.

Milly is guarded from the very first page, opting for meaningless fun rather than a deep bond with someone, yet secretly craving the acceptance and love she deserves, Aubrey is a very sweet girl that seems to carry a burden too heavy for her alone and Jonah is...odd. It's the best way I can describe him, to be honest.

Whether they want it or not, all 3 end up on a ship, on their way to the Story family resort for the next months.

So here's the thing about this book: I had a rollercoaster with it. I was unsure about it, then I got intrigued. Afterwards I started questioning the author and some scenes in the book but then it seemed to be going back to normal. And finally, the mystery thickened and I was sold. 

Oh and then the questionable scenes made sense. Almost forgot to mention that.

Over the course of the book I started bonding with some characters and picking favorites and Milly and Jonah have won first prize here. The author has a very unique way of writing these characters, it's just impossible not to love them and relate to them on some levels. And I'm talking about all the books here.

Now, the thing is, I can't reaaaaally say too much because it's a murder mystery and I would just spoil it all for you, but I'll say this.

We have skeletons buried by the older generation, aka the parents, we have revenge and we have secrets all around.

The Cousins is a book that I recommend fully on any given day. If you're looking for a good mystery, a very twisted story with a crazy past and a book to keep your adrenaline pumping, then you came to the right place. This book checks all the boxes.

If you're a fan of the genre or looking for something to get you into it, then I think you should definitely give this one a try. It's more than worth your time.

Educație Fatală de Naomi Novik este una dintre cărțile pe care le-am așteptat cu nerăbdare în anul 2021.

Aici avem parte de magie, pericol, adrenalină și o școală cum nu ați mai întâlnit până acum. Așa că pregătiți-vă pașaportul, biletul de avion și foaia matricolă, următoarea noastră destinație este Școala Solomonarilor.

Cartea o are în prim plan pe Galadriel „El” Higgins, o vrăjitoare neobișnuit de puternică, capabilă să înfrunte orice pericol. Este, de asemenea, candidata ideală pentru a deveni o răuvrăjitoare, însă compasul ei moral este în locul potrivit. Pentru moment, cel puțin.

Sinceră să fiu, cred că este prima dată când întâlnesc o astfel de situație într-o carte fantasy: un potențial personaj negativ care dispune atât de putere, cât și de oportunitate și motiv, însă refuză să le facă rău celor din jur.

„Probabil că aș fi putut (...) să extrag mana de la toți prietenii lui din enclavă. Aș fi putut să-i secătuiesc pe toți. (...) Eu însă l-am ignorat (...) încercând să nu izbucnesc în plâns.”

 Cred că după această dezvăluire am început să o plac pe Galadriel. Până atunci, nu pot spune ca o aveam la inimă.

Okay, poate că nici acum nu este preferata mea, însă uneori e nevoie de timp să te atașezi de un personaj.

Huh, acum că mă gândesc totuși, Naomi Novik aproape că ne-a dat o serie de cărți unde personajul negativ ar fi și principal...nu pot nega că ideea aceasta sună foarte tentant, în special dacă personajul în cauză se dovedește a fi unul foarte simpatic, de care ajungem să ne atașăm pentru că este scris prea bine pentru a fi rău și nu este vina sa că este rău de la bun început...

*ahem* Darkling, Sebastian Morgenstern *ahem*

Okay, o carte din perspectiva lui Darkling ar fi una pe care aș cumpăra-o în secunda în care ar ajunge pe rafturi 😇🤭

Okay, okay, mă opresc 😇 dar poate într-o zi va fi să fie, cine știe 🤭

Înainte să intru în mai multe detalii, trebuie să spun un lucru. Educație Fatală s-a simțit ca o versiune mai dark pentru Harry Potter, dacă Hogwarts ar fi fost mortal, nu ar fi existat profesori, iar Harry ar fi fost plasat în Slytherin și ar fi fost un strateg mai bun decât s-a dovedit a fi.

Saau, același scenariu, însă cu Slytherin Hermione ca protagonistă.

Acestea fiind spuse, să ne întoarcem la carte 🙈

Galadriel ascunde o putere deosebită, hotărând să nu își dezvăluie însă potențialul până la momentul potrivit - absolvirea.
Totuși, mai are de așteptat un an până atunci. Și după cum bine știm cu toții, foarte multe se pot întâmpla într-un an.

Și, desigur, acum s-a infiltrat și Orion Lake în peisaj, eroul școlii și persoana pe care El o displace, probabil, cel mai mult.

Nu știu de voi, dar mie-mi sună a enemies to lovers 😌 *wink wink nudge nudge*

Școala Solomonarilor este un loc aparte...dar nu întotdeauna într-un sens pozitiv. Pe când Hogwarts este unul dintre cele mai sigure locuri din lume pentru tinerii vrăjitori, un loc unde aceștia se pot forma și unde pot învăța să își folosească puterile, Școala Solomonarilor este un loc extrem de periculos, construit în vid pe baza magiei. Oh, am menționat cumva și capcanele care apar și dispar de bună voie?

Construcția în sine este descrisă într-un fel care induce cititorului senzația că are o conștiintă proprie, lăsată în urmă de fondatori și că acționează după bunul plac.

Mi-a adus aminte vag de conacul despre care am citit în Mexican Gothic.

Acum, pe lângă școală, avem și creaturile înfometate care râvnesc după mana, puterea vrăjitorilor, și care se ascund în orice cotlon găsesc, pregătite de vânătoare.

Trebuie să recunosc, toate luptele, capcanele și atacurile nu au făcut decât să pompeze și mai multă adrenalină și să mă țină în priză până la final. 5 din 5 steluțe acestei experiențe, pentru că rareori găsești așa carte bună.

Primul volum al seriei este pur și simplu wow. Mă așteptam la foarte multă introducere fără sfârșit timp de 400 de pagini pentru a putea explica universul și sistemul magic în detaliu, dar nu a fost cazul. Naomi Novik știe ce face.

Educație Fatală este o poveste extraordinară și deschide o serie cu mult potențial să ajungă pe lista preferatelor. Acțiunea este fantastică, abia dacă mi-a alocat momente de respiro ici-colo, personajele sunt foarte bine construite și am ajuns chiar să mă atașez de câteva.
Galadriel însă, pe ea o mai țin în perioada de probă pentru moment.

Cred că elementul meu preferat din carte este școala și modul în care operează. Această școală este probabil una dintre puținele, dacă nu singura din cărțile cu tema academia, light sau dark, care, poate involuntar, îi învață pe tinerii studenți să supraviețuiască în lumea de afară.

Mi-a plăcut cartea, mi-a plăcut povestea, mi-a plăcut tot. Acum aștept cu nerăbdare cel de-al doilea volum. Cine știe, poate va fi chiar și mai bun decât primul.

Corsete, crinoline și ceaiuri dansante...am uitat oare ceva?

Oh, desigur, un notoriu criminal în serie.

Jack Spintecătorul și Crimele din Whitechapel. Atât a fost nevoie să aud pentru a mă decide să încep seria. Dar hai să deschidem cu un background story.

Jack a fost un criminal în serie care a terorizat Londra în toamna anului 1888 și care a dispărut înainte să înceapă iarna, astfel rămânând neidentificat. A rămas în istorie drept unul dintre cele mai cunoscute cazuri nerezolvate, oamenii speculând și în prezent atât identitatea lui Jack, cât și detalii despre viața sa și motivele pe care le-a avut pentru a comite crimele.

Ce mi-a atras atenția legat de această carte a fost genul mystery. Înainte să am o idee clară legată de genuri, autori și ce fel de cărți îmi plac cel mai mult, Agatha Christie și misterele sale se numărau printre preferate. Acest roman s-a simțit, oarecum, ca o scurtă călătorie în timp.

De data aceasta totuși, mă pot lăuda că am descoperit criminalul înaintea protagonistei.

Povestea o urmărește pe Audrey-Rose Wadsworth, o tânără de familie bună, a cărei ambiție este să devină medic legist. La acea vreme și în special venind din partea unei femei, o asemenea ambiție nu era văzută cu ochi buni, prin urmare tânăra este nevoită să participe la lecții pe ascuns, devenind ucenica unchiului ei.

Doctorul Wadsworth însă are mai mult de un singur ucenic, iar șarmantul domn Thomas Cresswell ne este introdus chiar în primele pagini.

Primul meu gând a fost: un love interest atât de curand? Miroase a clișeu...

Dar oh, cât de departe am fost de adevăr.

La început, Thomas nu se comportă ca un love interest. El este un personaj rece și închis în sine, ascunzând fiecare emoție care îl străbate. Audrey-Rose pe de altă parte este impulsivă, determinată și incapabilă să stea departe de riscuri.

Nici nu știu de unde să încep în a descrie distracția pe care o aduc cei doi când sunt împreună. Încăpățânarea este o trăsătură pe care o au în comun și care face ca fiecare discuție pe care o poartă să devină o competiție, amândoi dornici să arate că celălalt greșește.

Trebuie să spun că odată ce aceste „competiții” au început, a devenit din ce în ce mai greu să las cartea din mână.

„Intelectul ei, deși nu este nici pe departe la fel de vast ca al meu, s-ar putea dovedi de ajutor.”

 Un alt lucru pe care l-am apreciat citind această carte este nota feministă pe care o adoptă. Audrey-Rose nu este femeia tipică anilor 1800. Ea râvnește să își arate valoarea și să își câștige independența. Pe lângă acest impuls însă, tânăra este copleșită și de frica unei posibile căsătorii și de ideea de a deveni doar un accesoriu pentru viitorul ei soț.

În acest punct, un alt personaj înțelept își face intrarea: Liza

„Poartă-ți atuurile de parcă ar fi un cuțit, scumpa mea verișoară! Niciun bărbat nu a inventat vreun corset pentru mințile noastre. Lasă-i să creadă că stăpânesc lumea. Nu uita nicicând că pe tron stă o regină.”

 Sunt de părere că pentru o carte a cărei acțiune se petrece în secolul al XIX-lea, subiectul este atât de actualitate, cât și controversat, însă este o schimbare foarte bine venită. De data aceasta, romance-ul nu este punctul central.

Cred că anumite subiecte discutate în roman vor rămâne cu mine o perioadă îndelungată, dar nu pot spune că mă deranjează. Cel mai important dintre ele are și cea mai puternică învățătură:

Ca femeie, este important să fii tu insăți întotdeauna. Nu lăsa pe nimeni să îți impună ce să faci sau să îți modeleze viitorul. Acea pânză este doar a ta să o pictezi după bunul plac.

The Lucky List by Rachael Lippincott | Review

I can sit all day long and talk about this pure master piece of a book, but if I do, my review will probably end up longer than the book itself, so let's capture the important parts.

The first time I heard about this book was when my best friend started it and I did as well at her recommendation. She loved it very much and hearing all the lovely words and praises she had about it afterwards, I just had to get my hands on it and read it myself.

And, of course, who would pass up the opportunity to simp over a favorite book with their favorite person? Cause I sure am not passing that up.

The book follows Emily Clark, a girl who's life has been turned upside down by the tragic and premature loss of her mother. Three years later, Em has successfully locked away her adventurous side and confined herself into a safe little bubble. Instead of seeing opportunities, Emily started seeing risks everywhere she looked.

One day, while cleaning out her mother's closet, she stumbled upon an old bucket list, one that her mom made before her own senior year of high school.
And this was it for Emily, it was decided. She was going to complete this list in the hopes of feeling close to her mother once more.

To be completely honest with you all here, this part wasn't my favorite from the beginning. It felt like she wasn't really trying to discover herself as much as she was trying to become more like her mother. It felt like she misunderstood the whole idea of a bucket list, but it turns out I was quite wrong on this one.

We'll get there in a moment however.

The Lucky List opens on a bingo night, a beautiful tradition for the town and a bitter one for our main character. This night though promises a good time, because this is when we meet Blake Carter, a childhood friend of Emily's and the daughter of her father's best friend.

I think it's safe to say that we are in for quite a bit of Blake content.

Now, when she was first introduced, she was a complete ray of sunshine that caught the attention of the entire room, especially Emily's.

"It's safe to say Blake won the puberty lotto a million and one times over. (...) And I'm not the only one noticing. Literally everyone is looking at our table right now."

Blake is our main character's polar opposite in many ways. Where Em is a very closed off character, an introvert who nearly gave up on all, she is outgoing and doesn't back away from any challenge coming her way. I would go so far as to say that it's obvious from the very first page how she is the change Emily needs in her life, her motivation to live again.

"We're all lucky, not because everything works out, but because we get to wake up in the morning and take chances and make mistakes and keep trying not to."

The very foundation of this book is built on raw feelings of grief and loss, on anxiety and depression and a lot of hiding. The author managed to capture a bit of everything when building both Emily and Blake, thus making the story line cogs work in perfect sync.

The ending of the book proved me that our main character wasn't content to remain in the past and live a shadow of her previous life. It showed, however, how she matured, and with the help of the right people, she became her true self.

And made her own bucket list, finally.

I think the most accurate thing I can say about this book is that it's the perfect comfort read. And if you ever happen to lose track of who you are, never hesitate to use this book as a help guide to finding yourself again. In my opinion, it seems like a good start.

I fully recommend this book to anyone interested in reading the sweetest and most wholesome story ever written. I promise it is fully worth your time!   

Roșu, Alb și Sânge Albastru de Casey McQuiston | Recenzie

Paparazzi și situații încurcate, torturi de nuntă și dimineți în Paris, Roșu, Alb și Sânge Albastru este lectura perfectă pentru iubitorii genului romance.

Cartea mi-a fost recomandată călduros de cea mai bună prietenă la finalul anului trecut, așa că am adăugat-o TBR-ului de îndată, iar acum câteva săptămâni am decis că este momentul perfect să mă apuc de ea.

Acesta este romanul de debut al lui Casey McQuiston și urmărește relația complicată dintre Alex, fiul președintei Statelor Unite și Henry, prințul de Wales. Cei doi s-au detestat din clipa în care s-au cunoscut și s-au folosit de fiecare moment împreună pentru a pune în evidență acest lucru.

În special de o nuntă regală,. Într-un tort de 75.000 de dolari.

În urma incidentului, Henry și Alex sunt forțați să petreacă un weekend împreună pentru a evita un conflict la nivel mondial. 

Nu am știut mai mult despre carte înainte să o încep, dar a fost de ajuns pentru a-mi trezi interesul. 

Trebuie să recunosc, am avut așteptări foarte mari de la Roșu, Alb și Sânge Albastru, în special după ce am auzit părerile și recenziile excelente de pe BookTube și Bookstagram și pot spune că nu a dezamăgit. A fost o lectură rapidă și deconectantă care m-a făcut să râd constant. 

Cu toate că este un roman de dragoste, relația celor doi nu este singurul punct de interes al cărții. Alex este pasionat de politică și visează la o carieră în acest domeniu, astfel implicându-se în campania de realegere a mamei sale. Pregătirile pentru campanie și planurile pentru asigurarea victoriei ne sunt împărtășite în detaliu și contrar așteptărilor mele, nu au fost secvențe seci, de umplutură. Au fost în schimb capitole captivante, încărcate de umorul lui Alex și de tachinările constante dintre el și Henry.

Câteva părți din carte sunt scrise sub forma mesajelor sau email-urilor și sunt sarea și piperul poveștii. Interacțiunile inițiale sunt precaute, însă treptat devin haotice și amuzante și sunt fără doar și poate preferatele mele

”(...) trebuie să realizezi cât de nepotrivit e să-mi pocești intenționat titulatura. Te pot face pernă pentru scaun pentru acest gen de lezmajestate. Din fericire pentru tine, nu cred că mi-ai completa decorul din camera de zi.” 

Aceste interacțiuni reprezintă însă și momente de vulnerabilitate în care cei doi tineri pot fi ei înșiși, fără protocol sau bodyguarzi. Ele încep a clădi încrederea fără de care nicio relație nu poate supraviețui și prin aceste momente ajungem să cunoaștem o altă latură a protagoniștilor, cea rezervată pentru viața privată.

„Te gândești vreodată cum ar fi dacă nu te-ar cunoaște nimeni pe lume?”

Cartea conține scene de dragoste explicite, motiv pentru care nu o recomand persoanelor sub 16 ani. 

Roșu, Alb și Sânge Albastru vă va captiva de la prima pagină cu o ficțiune pe care nu o veți mai putea lăsa din mână. Dacă sunteți în căutare de o lectură ușoară cu umor predominant, aceasta este alegerea perfectă.

Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney | Review

I'll start by saying that I read the book in audio format and don't own it, hence the photo isn't mine. 

Now onto the serious stuff.

Rock Paper Scissors is a psychological thriller which indeed fits in the genre it's included into, but I have to say that it wasn't for me.

The book follows Adam and Amelia Wright, a couple whose marriage is slowly sinking to the bottom of the ocean. There is no happiness anymore, only secrets, lies and problems. When Amelia wins a trip to Scotland for a weekend, they see it as a chance to either make or break their marriage for good.

Synopsis sounds interesting so far, but that's not all. Adam has lived his entire life with face blindness, and so he can't recognize anyone around him.

Alright, here is where my interest was peaked because my first thought was that maybe he somehow married the wrong woman or that she pretended to be someone else to fool him and that perhaps we will discover some sort of murder that way. 

Nope, the story was even more confusing than this, but we'll get there soon enough.

So as with every psychological thriller in existence, it started vague, in the middle of the story and the suspense was kept for the entirety of the book. That is a plus in my book because the suspense makes it all in this genre.

My problem however starts with the actual execution of the story itself and its characters, which was poor to say the least.

The book is told in multiple POVs, which yes, helps a lot because we get insights from all the characters, but in this case we also had some letters retelling us the past every other chapter, which made it harder to focus on the present time story, especially in audio format. 

Ironically though, as much as I felt like they disturbed the story line, they were the best part of this book in my opinion. They're letters to Adam written by his wife for their every anniversary, yet hidden away and never opened. Their story is quite a sweet one, with some exceptions, but sweet. And very, very sad.

I wanted to like this book, but it felt like every thread the author picked could have gone right, instead they chose to go sideways and get lost in the story. Hearing the dynamic between husband and wife made me decide that I am taking no sides and I am not rooting for them either, hence neither is a saint and neither deserves it.

And while the letters were a good part of the book, they didn't make me want to side with the wife that much, because all they show is a severe lack of communication that led their marriage to the ruins that is now.

I like the genre, I like mysteries with very unexpected endings, but this book I can only describe as twisted and toxic, having an unnecessary fortune cookie like writing style that kept getting on my nerves. Overall, didn't like it and for sure do not recommend it.
