“When people say impossible, they usually mean improbable.”
So I was right, the series is indeed worth continuing because the last two books were amazing. Well, mainly because my absolute favourite character, Nikolai, made an appearence (finally) and the story just got so much more interesting. I was actually surprised by how fast things happened in the second book compared to the first one.
Now quite a few things happened, secrets are revealed and last but not least, characters changed.
Remember how I said Alina is a basic and annoying character? Well that's not the case anymore. I find her a much more intriguing character now, having been presented to a new side of her. She grew from modest to powerhungry very quick.
“What is infinite? The universe and the greed of men.”
The main characters remain pretty much the same, only that we have one more added to the list, and that is Prince Nikolai Lantsov.
I absolutely, without any doubt, love Nikolai, he is the love of my life in this book. He is reckless, stubborn, smart and most importantly, he is a leader. I adore the relationship he has with Alina and the exchange of witty remarks between the two, they made me laugh very much while reading the books.

“I hope you weren't looking to me to be the voice of reason. I keep to a strict diet of ill-advised enthusiasm and heartfelt regret.”
There also is one more character that drew my attention at the end of the second book and throughout the third, and that is Genya Safin. She enraptured me with her bravery and belief that even when things seem ruined, they are not.
“Na razrusha'ya. I am not ruined. E'ya razrushost. I am ruination.”
I grew quite fond of the Tailor throughout this series and I am very excited to see more of her adventures in future books.
The political games and the magic system keep on fascinating me page by page, giving the story the spark that keeps it in motion. The fact that they are on the brink of war and how they deal with it when it comes is very interesting to follow, giving the story quite a realistic note. The characters are, in fact, just a people fighting bravely to defend their homes, each and every one a soldier, some in their own way.
“Beauty was your armor. Fragile stuff, all show. But what's inside you? That's steel. It's brave and unbreakable. And it doesn't need fixing.”
I will not lie though, the first 50 pages or so of books 2 and 3 are the definition of boring and potential reading slump alert, but then something big happens and we're back on track with an amazing story and a magically built world.

After finishing the third book I felt like the author kind of tried to please everyone, with both the course of the story and the ending. I would have liked a slightly different ending, another romance, perhaps a little more death, but I enjoyed this story so very much nonetheless.
Even considering the issues I've had with the main character throughout the story, this series was everything I didn't know I wanted and needed in my life. Especially Nikolai, he is definitely someone I need in my life. I totally recommend these books if you're a fan of fantasy and you're looking for a whole new world and magic system to blow you away. I can guarantee you will find that in here.
