I started the month of October last year with Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson and good Lord, what a great read it was!
I have read a few works of Maureen Johnson's in the past, but none of them were this good. I absolutely love the author's writing style, murder mystery is definitely her genre!
First things first, the book opens with a poem. It is by no means a pretty romance poem, but more of a ransom note borderline death threat type of poem which gives the perfect amount of chills as an opening to a murder mystery novel.
We follow our main character, Stevie Bell, who is an aspiring detective and was accepted into Ellingham Academy, a private school for gifted kids in the hopes that she will solve the mystery of the century - what happened to Alice Ellingham, the daughter of the founder?
Alice and her mother, Iris Ellingham, disappeared on the night of April the 13th, 1936 while they were out for their usual car ride and the only clue they have is an anonymous letter, a murder poem of sorts, signed Truly Devious. The same night is marked in the history of the Academy as the night Dolores Epstein, a brilliant young girl and an avid reader, was murdered, leaving behind an old copy of Sherlock Holmes.
Stevie has been fascinated by this case, the Truly Devious case, ever since she first heard about it and never ceased trying to solve it. Browsing forums and archives, she gathered enough material to make her own evidence board to help lead her closer to uncovering the truth.
The only problem?
The Ellingham case went cold decades before Stevie was even born. So if the authorities couldn't do anything about it, what could a 16 year old do?
A lot, as it appears.
Upon arriving at this school, Stevie sets up her evidence board and starts researching the family's old registers and whatnot, looking for clues that the police may have missed back in the 1930s. However, her work is interrupted when another murder shakes the entirety of Ellingham Academy.
Are the two mysteries connected in some way? Is Truly Devious back and bloodthirsty once more?
Or maybe the murderer's only desire is to continue what the original culprit started. In any case, Stevie's job gets a lot more complicated when all of her friends and house mates become suspects over night.
This book got me out of an impossible reading slump that looked like it didn't want to ever leave again. I didn't know what to expect going into it, so I didn't get my hopes up, but a few pages into it, I was hooked. The mystery is amazingly written, the slow burn romance is flawless, but my favorite has to be the way Maureen Johnson built the main character. I love the way she is, the way she feels everything, the way her mind works. I think Stevie Bell might be one of my absolute favorite characters of all time.
But the fun does not end here, no. Truly Devious is like no other murder mystery novel. It is, in fact, a series. The mystery expands over the course of three books, allowing us enough time to think of every theory possible and suspect every single character until our brains give out.
Sadly, I did not guess the culprit in either of the cases, but I at least got to enjoy the books to the fullest. Maureen Johnson is a highly talented author and I am excited to read more of her books, especially the fourth one in this series that comes out this year!
I recommend that you to read this series if you're on the look out for a good mystery thriller. This one will for sure be the best choice.
